Inspired by the book “Flora of Middle-Earth”
by Walter S. Judd & Graham A. Judd.
The experience of reading Tolkien goes far beyond reading words on a page. While we wander deeper in the books, we actually find ourselves immersed in Middle-Earth, imbued with its people, languages and myth-drenched cities and forests. These tales of epic wars, tragic romances and undying people drive the narrative forward, but it’s the thorough world building that transports us into these mysterious realms of magic. Among them : Woodland realms, pastoral towns and primordial forests in which trees can speak while others house millenia-old beings.
The professor’s process of magnifying, naming and animating all plants pushes us to notice the plants that surround us in a concrete way. Tolkienian mythopoeia does not promote escapism - it reconnects us to important elements of our internal, natural and cultural landscapes. It impacts how we interact with others and with our surroundings - with what we see, what we smell and what we hear.
Are you really listening to what surrounds you?
